Happy Spine | Back Therapy Workshop with Andrea Robertson & Dr. Geoff Outerbridge

Sitting at a desk, the wheel of a car, or even standing all day for work can be rough on the legs and lower back. Wake up the stiff parts of the hips, hamstrings, and lumbar spine with a stretchy, feel-good slow flow and then release into some yin style stretches to provide more space for the low back to relax.

This practice will present many modifications and points of consideration for practitioners with discomfort in their lower back and Sacro-illiac (SI). This practice will hopefully provide education and awareness to your existing practice and or provide you with options to modify. Props Needed: Two blocks and a strap.

Workshop Schedule:

~11-12:30 p.m:
Dr. Outerbrige will lead a discussion on mechanisms of back injuries and types of back pain, psychosocial risk factors for back pain, how to prevent and avoid aggravating disc problems and spine sparing strategies. He will end the discussion with some Q&A.

~12:45-2 p.m:
Andrea Robertson will lead a 75 min yoga practice geared for back therapy. She will also discuss a morning or evening home practice you can follow each day to maintain a happy spine

About the instructors:

Dr. Outerbridge ran a multidisciplinary health clinic in Ottawa for 10 years that provided medical, massage, chiropractic and naturopathic services. As a chiropractor, his focus in practice included the prevention and management of occupational and sports related injuries, including exercise protocols and soft tissue management using Active Release Technique®, and Graston Technique®. Dr. Outerbridge sold his practice in 2011 to help launch World Spine Care (worldspinecare.org), an international, interprofessional nonprofit organization that is bringing full service care for spinal disorders to underserved regions around the world. Part of his work has been to launch the World Spine Care yoga project, a teacher-training program for locals at the World Spine Care clinics around the world. He continues as clinical director after spending 2 years in Botswana developing the pilot project and practices part time at the Ottawa Collaborative Care Center in Ottawa (www.oc3.ca).

Andrea Robertson began practicing asana (the physical practice of yoga) in her early 20′s as a means to open her tight overworked muscles after years of training marathons, adventure races and triathlons. Her first experience with yoga lit up her life and offered a method of training in a new way. Her practice continues to evolve by drawing inspiration from many different forms of yoga particularly Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin and Power. She is known for combining strength and power with softness and fluid motion in a creative flow wrapped together with a little yoga humour. All while instilling the importance of proper alignment and smart sequencing to create a balanced practice with both Yin/Yang

Andrea completed her 200-hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training in 2004 at a summer intensive program in Ottawa led by Yogi Vishva. Andrea has taken numerous workshops and trainings over the years but has learned the most from her ever growing students and is currently teaches around the Ottawa community. Andrea’s classes cater for a wide-range of students and include instruction for corporate clients, Pure Yoga Ottawa, and Ottawa South Community Centre. Her specialty class is Yoga For Athletes, she taught for the Ottawa Senators for 5 years and privates for former Ottawa Captain Daniel Alfredsson for the last 6 years of his career with Ottawa. One of Andrea main passions is travelling and facilitating adventurous therapeutic yoga retreats around the world from Costa Rica to Ireland, Italy and some in Canada. Her intention is always to provide a fresh creative class geared specifically to her students at hand. Andrea completed her first YogaDVD “Yoga for Runners” (2010), and is a Lululemon Athletica ambassador (2010-present).
